#keeping this for later #because there’s something that resonates with me about #two friends in a desperate battle of some sort #a war #a revolution #something #making the last sacrifice #and they both know they’re not going anywhere nice in the next life #not after all the blood and fire and betrayal #their cause may be just but they know better than to think that’s enough #maybe it’s just one of them who’s religious #who’s made peace with going to hell #and the other is angrily - aggressively - agnostic #doesn’t know whether to believe in a god that lets this happen #doesn’t know if it’s worse to believe there’s nothing and no one at all #and this is the one who says #as the bombs are set to go off and there’s no time to get away #head held high #grinning wickedly to the last #voice light and careless and ready to break under the weight of it all #‘see you in hell’ #a promise and an apology and defiance all wrapped in one #the other is hearing this from afar #on a radio perhaps #or a phone #hears the bombs go off and the line go dead #there’s very little time to mourn when you’re in the middle of a desperate battle #but those words #that promise #are held close to the heart #through the violence and the death and the long shivering waits while your life is balanced on a knife-edge for the thousandth time #see you in hell #a whisper in the cold #a mantra to keep the nightmares away #a prayer every time death dances past
